January 27 - Breaking Into Broadcast: A panel discussion with veteran TV producers

Date: January 27, 2009 - 2:00pm - 3:30pm

Television is the Holy Grail of advocacy communications. More Americans get their news from television than from any other source, and getting the right spokespeople in front of the right cameras puts many more eyeballs on your issue than most newspapers could hope to. Like the Grail, however, getting on TV often feels just out of reach.

But getting on TV is not as difficult as you might think. Understanding the news cycle, following story trends and anticipating the next step in those trends can get you to the door. Knowing what producers and reporters are looking for, and having the means to deliver it, makes getting inside the door much easier.

ReThink Media has assembled a group of former television professionals with a wide variety of experience in local and national news to tell you exactly what you need to do to pitch your story to the right people, and pique their interest with all the elements of a great TV news story.

The majority of the session will be open-ended Q&A with the professionals, a one-of-a-kind chance to have your questions answered by experts who can give you the insider's view, who will take you inside the newsroom, walk you through the decision-making process, and explain how to make sure your pitch gets heard and makes the biggest impact.

Don't miss this 90-minute online discussion: Wednesday January 27 at 2PM (EST) 1pm (CST) — 12 Noon (MST) — 11AM (PST)

FEATURED PANELISTS
Derwin Johnson, former producer for ABC News.

Derwin served as Middle East bureau chief for both CNN and ABC News, and was a member of Vice President George H. W. Bush’s traveling press corps. Derwin was also broadcast producer for ABC News’ World News This Morning and Good Morning America news, produced segments for World News Tonight, Nightline and 20/20, and was the lead pool producer for the American broadcast networks for the Persian Gulf War based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He is now a senior communications counselor for APCO Worldwide.

Susannah Cernojevich, former Special Assignments producer.

As special assignments producer, Susannah was responsible for researching and assembling in depth, investigative news stories for a large-market, nightly newscast in Los Angeles. Following up on newsroom leads and tips from viewers, Susannah found the most compelling and moving stories in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Susannah went on to become Communications Director for Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey of California, and a delegate to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Alison Woo, former local news producer.

Alison began her news career at CNN, quickly moving on to produce at local stations in Florida and the Carolinas. Alison’s work at these 24-hour regional news stations emphasized local angles on national and statewide stories. Finding local experts to speak on national issues is a key issue in local news, and Alison is well qualified to explain how to get on a local producer’s radar, and build and maintain that relationship for maximum exposure. Alison is now chief maven at New Media Mavens, a communications consulting firm.

The panel will be moderated by NSHR Senior Media Associate Dave Saldana, who will explain the workings of the modern newsroom. An Emmy Award-winning television news producer, Dave has worked in national and local TV news, in big and small markets.
