Communications Associate, Inclusive Democracy

ReThink Media seeks a communications associate to support their Inclusive Democracy team. The associate works on many aspects of securing a democracy that works for everyone, but will have a particular focus on the corporate special interests and dark-money groups that are orchestrating an all-out assault on judicial independence, the freedom to vote, and the legitimacy of our elections.

Former ReThink Media staff have noted that our partnerships with a wide variety of coalitions and state-level campaigns result in more professional development in a year with us than in five years at most other workplaces. We partner with dozens of groups working to align messages and provide capacity-building support across an entire sector. This means no billable hours and the ability to say yes to helping organizations who are doing great work, but do not have the resources or staff to get that work out there.

ReThink Media is a unique, nonprofit organization that places media and communications at the center of our movement-building agenda. We strengthen the collaborative media and communications capacity of state and national advocacy groups; increase the “voice share” of their spokespeople; and provide in-depth media, messaging, and opinion research to inform movement strategy.

We focus on long-term engagement with our advocacy partners and with the issues we take on—all driven by a belief that the stronger the groups are across an issue sector and the tighter their collaboration, the more likely they are to win real and lasting policy victories. At present, ReThink works in three distinct, yet interconnected, issue areas: protecting human and civil rights; moving toward a more constructive US foreign and national security policy; and making the promise of democracy real for us all.

The communications associate reports to the Program Director of the Inclusive Democracy Team and works to support partner groups in their efforts to amplify new voices, power rapid response, communicate collaboratively, strengthen message cohesion, and use data to drive strategy.

We are looking for a problem solver with a proven record of media relations success. Importantly, the ideal candidate—an avid communicator who understands the role of digital strategy and storytelling in communications—will be committed to racial justice and advancing a more representative democracy.

The ideal candidate will have two or more years of experience working in the fields of media, communications, and press or public relations. Experience working as a Capitol Hill or NGO communications staffer, in campaign or advocacy communications, or in creating, pitching, and placing content and/or spokespeople in the media is a plus.

Principal Duties

The Communications Associate is responsible for coordinating with and assisting ReThink Media’s member groups in monitoring both traditional and online news coverage, and in responding rapidly and effectively to breaking news. This includes tracking all key national and in-state reporters, communications staff, and opposition spokespeople. It also means building and maintaining shared press lists, assisting groups in developing individual press lists and, where appropriate, assisting with the editing, pitching, and placement of content and spokespeople. Importantly, the Communications Associate will work to build capacity among organizational partners, positioning them to better lead communications strategy from the ground.

Specific goals will be set quarterly, corresponding to the following duties:

  • Monitor daily news, opinion, and social media coverage and review daily news digests from the sector in order to identify key opportunities for rapid response;
  • Draft daily clips related to top news stories with relevant social media content;
  • Assist in the development of timely and effective talking points, messaging tips, and, where appropriate, create statements, op-eds, letters to the editor, and sample social media content to be distributed in response to breaking news developments and ahead of known media opportunities;
  • Develop expert knowledge of all of the key reporters and outlets covering these issues, with particular attention paid to developing relationships with ethnic media;
  • Train partner organizations to develop and maintain tailored press lists;
  • Build meaningful relationships with partner organizations and develop expertise on the issues they work on, their unique media profiles, their key spokespeople, and their access to validators;
  • Assist partners in developing strategic communications plans and in implementing media strategies;
  • Pitch and place stories and op-eds;
  • Help provide media skills training;
  • Help coordinate social media strategies and tactics, including both longer-term efforts and rapid response opportunities.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience monitoring news coverage, writing press materials, developing media strategies, and/or pitching stories.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communications skills.
  • Experience with creating digital content and strategy for social media.
  • Demonstrated experience in fast-paced advocacy campaign communications, with a preference for experience in state-based advocacy/political media relations.
  • Excellent news sense and political savvy.
  • Knowledge of print, broadcast, and online news media.

Desirable but not required:

  • Experience working in multi-racial and multi-ethnic coalitions.
  • Experience with the work of ReThink Media’s Democracy Program.
  • Experience with creating graphic or video content.
  • Experience with Cision, MailChimp, and/or Sprout Social.
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus.
