Internships and Fellowships
ReThink Media’s paid Internship and Fellowship program provides talented undergraduate and graduate students in traditional and digital media and communications, journalism, design and data visualization, media and public opinion research and analysis, website management and tech support, and non-profit management, with hands-on experience in the field of issue advocacy communications. Fellows and Interns are trained and mentored by experienced professionals and gain real-work experience in applying the latest media tools and strategies in addressing some of the most prominent issue campaigns of our day. Interns and Fellows also get the chance to work and develop contacts with many of the leading nonprofits and experts in the country.
Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of skills and responsibilities in media relations, research, design, management, and communications skills and responsibilities, many of which are described below.
CMS + CRM Fellowship (Paid): Fall 2018
ReThink Media seeks a talented website and database manager to join our core team. The ideal candidate will be an incurable systems thinker who loves relational databases, creating workflows, and managing tag taxonomies. This is a unique opportunity to put technical talents to work for a social justice organization.
ReThink Media is a unique, nonprofit organization that strengthens movements through building the collaborative media and communications capacity of state and national advocacy groups, increasing the voice share of their spokespeople, experts, and allies, and providing in-depth media, messaging, and opinion research to inform movement strategy. Working with our funding partners, we focus on long-term engagement with the groups we work with and the issues we take on—all driven by a belief that the stronger the groups are across an issue sector and the tighter their collaboration, the more likely they are to win real and lasting policy victories. At present, ReThink works in three distinct, yet interconnected, issue areas: the protection of human and civil rights, strengthening our democracy, and for a more constructive U.S. foreign and national security policy.
ReThink Media’s paid Internship and Fellowship program provides talented undergraduate and graduate students (and recent graduates) with hands-on experience in issue advocacy communications. We hire students in traditional and digital media and communications, journalism, design and data visualization, website management, media and opinion research, and non-profit management.
Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of skills and responsibilities in media relations, research, design, management, and communications skills and responsibilities.
Activities will focus on maintaining and updating the back-end of ReThink Media’s website (Drupal), building out and maintaining our HubSpot CRM, and acting as liaison our website and CRM vendors. Activities may include:
- Assisting with Drupal (CMS) website content management; assisting with training other staff.
- Assisting with ReThink’s adoption of HubSpot (CRM); assisting with training other staff.
- Updating or adjusting Mail Chimp templates, list integration with our website and HubSpot, and one-off campaigns.
- Developing tag taxonomies, contact attributes, and workflows to track and measure the work of our staff in areas like training, reporter relations, and membership.
- Developing, customizing, and using analytics reports to measure and improve both the work of our collaboratives and member groups as well as the promotion of our own content.
Additional Skills and Qualifications
- Proficiency with Drupal CMS required; experience designing a Drupal website a plus.
- Experience with CRMs such as HubSpot, Salesforce, Neon, or Nation Builder.
- Basic HTML required; CSS, SQL, and/or Python a major plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and similar spreadsheet applications.
- Familiarity with WordPress and/or other content management systems a plus.
- Experience with Mail Chimp, Survey Monkey, and/or Trello a plus.
- Experience with graphic design, photo editing, or video editing a plus.
We are looking for someone who loves databases; you will be a critical part of bringing standardization and efficiency to areas of tracking and measurement that have been ad hoc or experimental. Your job will include balancing efficiency and technical recommendations (and limitations) with realistic use cases across a staff of 20+.
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to one or more of the policy issues represented by the groups and collaboratives that ReThink Media works with. At present we are looking to hire candidates in our Berkeley, CA office for a three-month term. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to extend the length and/or breadth of their position.
Hours and Compensation
ReThink Media Interns and Fellows are expected to work at least 20 hours per week (although less time may be considered in special circumstances). Interns currently in undergraduate programs are paid $13.75 per hour. Fellows currently in graduate or masters programs are paid $15.75 per hour.
