Ashley Houghton has worked with ReThink since 2011. She leads in developing, implementing, and supporting effective media and communications outreach and capacity-building strategies across the Security and Rights sector. She also manages rapid response and crisis communications, delivers media and spokesperson trainings, and assists with ReThink’s media and messaging analysis on Security and Rights issues.
Before her transition to Managing Director, Ashley was a Senior Media Associate on the Security and Rights team, leading surveillance coalition efforts, tracking news stories, supporting coalition-wide media relations work, and assisting individual member groups with their own media outreach. She has also played a lead role in work on the Pentagon Budget, in developing member organizations’ online profiles and social media strategies, in reporter outreach, and in managing our crisis communications initiatives. Ashley has secured placements at the top print, online, and broadcast outlets in the country.
After graduating from the University of Maryland, Ashley briefly worked in the nonprofit world before plunging into work at a Washington public relations firm, where she honed her skills in promoting experts and newsworthy personalities. She’s always looking for new hobbies, from arc welding to swing dancing, and has gained notoriety in DC for her semi-annual “Wear Something Awesome on Your Head” birthday parties.
